Glass tube or RF tube?

Aeon offers both kinds of CO₂ source, and they suit different work. RF tubes are built for fine, fast engraving with crisp detail. Glass tubes of the same nominal wattage generally cut thicker stock more readily. The settings page treats them separately for that reason.

If an RF machine engraves beautifully but struggles with thick wood or acrylic, slow the cut down and add passes, or move thick cutting to a glass-tube machine.

Where the numbers come from

The values are starting points from tested CO₂ settings, scaled to your tube’s wattage. Run a test card on scrap before a real job: tubes, optics and material batches all vary.

Setup in LightBurn

Import the SVG with File → Import (files are in millimetres). Red lines are cut, blue lines are score and black fills are engrave, each on its own LightBurn layer. Enter the speed and max power from the settings page, set min power a few percent below max, and save them in LightBurn’s Material Library. Engrave first, then score, then cut. Full details on the LightBurn guide.

Looking after the machine

  • Glass tubes last longest below about 70 to 80% of rated current, and need cool water (under about 25 °C / 77 °F).
  • Uneven cuts across the bed usually mean the mirrors need aligning.
  • Kerf differs between tubes and lenses. Measure it for each machine.

Fine engraving projects

RF machines shine on detailed engraving: photos, star maps and fine lettering on anodized aluminum and slate.
