Why output power matters so much on a diode

The Atomstack range runs from 5.5 W to 70 W of optical output, more than a tenfold spread. A setting that engraves nicely on an A5 Pro will scorch on an X70, and a cut that takes six passes on a 20 W module may take one or two on a 48 W one. The settings page scales its values to the output you choose, as starting points from tested diode settings. Diode results depend heavily on focus and air assist, so confirm them with a test card on scrap.

High-power diodes

  • Engrave lower than you think. On 40 W and up, engraving often needs only a small share of the power. Start at the low end of the suggested range.
  • Air assist is essential for cutting. More power means more flame; strong air keeps the kerf clear and the edge clean.
  • Still no clear acrylic. Wattage doesn’t change wavelength: blue diode light passes through clear acrylic and glass. See acrylic and glass.
  • Thicker cuts need focus care. For cuts deeper than about 5 mm, focusing a little into the material cuts cleaner.

Setup

Atomstack lasers use GRBL controllers and work with LightBurn and LaserGRBL. In LightBurn, import the SVG with File → Import and set red to Line (cut), blue to Line at lower power (score) and black to Fill (engrave). Match the speed units: GRBL and LaserGRBL use mm/min, LightBurn can show mm/s. Engrave first, then score, then cut, and press Frame before starting. You can also send G-code straight from any studio or convert an SVG with SVG to G-code.

Common problems

Burn marks underneath: raise the work on a honeycomb or pins and turn air assist up for cuts.

Cuts through on one side only: level the work surface with the frame and re-focus after moving the laser.

Joints too loose or tight: diode kerf is usually around 0.08 to 0.15 mm, but measure yours and enter it in the box and inlay studios.

Safety

Everyone in the room needs goggles rated for 445 to 455 nm when an open-frame diode is running, and a 70 W diode makes that even more important. Vent the smoke outside, stay with the machine and keep a fire extinguisher close.
