What it makes

The Jigsaw Puzzles studio cuts any rectangle (or a round or shaped outline) into interlocking pieces. Set the size and a piece count, choose a style, and drop in a photo if you want a picture puzzle. It’s a popular personalised gift: a family photo, a wedding picture, a pet, a child’s drawing, a save-the-date or a pregnancy announcement.

Size, pieces and style

Set the puzzle size, then either a target piece count or exact columns × rows. Then pick a style:

  • Classic knobs: the traditional jigsaw shape.
  • Square dovetails: a geometric look that suits modern designs.
  • Soft wave: rounded and easy for small hands.

Randomness and Seed make every puzzle unique; press Shuffle for a new layout, or keep a seed to reproduce the same puzzle later.

Photo puzzles

Drop a photo at the top of the panel and the export includes a combined SVG with the engraving and the cut lines. Engrave the photo first, then cut the lines, so the pieces don’t shift during engraving. For the best picture, prepare it in Photo Engrave first: light, even-grained basswood shows photos best.

Extras

Number the pieces on the back so a puzzle can be sorted or checked, and add a frame tray and backing board so the finished puzzle has somewhere to live. A box sized to the puzzle makes it gift-ready.

Kerf and fit. Laser-cut pieces fit loosely by the width of the kerf, which is usually right for a puzzle: tight enough to hold, loose enough to separate. Very thick material or a wide kerf can make pieces fall apart; 3 mm stock is the sweet spot.

Cutting tips

Puzzles have long, intricate cut paths, so heat builds up. Use air assist, mask the surface if smoke stains show, and make sure the cut goes fully through everywhere before you lift the sheet: a single uncut bridge can snap a knob. If you are unsure of your settings, run a test card.

Questions

How big should puzzle pieces be?

Keep pieces above about 15 mm for adults and above about 30 mm for small children, who also need the softer wave style rather than small knobs.

What wood is best for puzzles?

3 mm basswood or birch plywood cuts clean puzzle joints. Basswood is lighter in colour, which suits engraved photos.

How do I add a photo?

Drop a photo at the top of the panel. The export then includes a combined SVG: engrave the photo first, then cut the lines.

Will two puzzles look the same?

Not unless you want them to. Randomness and Seed vary the knobs; press Shuffle for a new layout. Use the same seed to cut an identical puzzle again.

Why cut the lines last?

If the pieces are cut first, they can shift slightly while the photo engraves, and the picture won't line up across the pieces.
