What it makes
The Patterns & Hinges studio makes two kinds of thing. Living hinges are cut patterns that make plywood bend, for rounded boxes, book covers, lamp shades and curved panels. Decorative patterns are cut-outs and engraving textures for panels, inserts and backgrounds. Both are generated to the exact size of your panel with a solid margin round the edge.
Living hinge patterns
| Pattern | Bends | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Straight | One direction | Box corners, cylinders, book spines |
| Wavy | One direction, softer look | Visible curved panels where the pattern is part of the design |
| Diamond (2-way) | Two directions | Gentle domes and panels that flex both ways |
Hinge settings that matter
Three numbers control how a hinge behaves. Line spacing: closer lines bend further but make the hinge weaker. Cut length: longer cuts bend further. Bridge width, the uncut material between cuts in a line: wider bridges are stronger but stiffer. Use Hinge zone width to put the hinge only where the panel has to bend.
Test a sample first. Every plywood behaves differently, and grain direction matters. Cut a small sample strip in your material and bend it before cutting a full panel. The Calibration Center has a hinge test, and the kerf page explains why the cut width affects how much a hinge flexes.
Decorative panels and textures
The same studio makes cut patterns (honeycomb, Voronoi, perforation dots, triangles, rounded squares and radial mandalas) and engraving textures (waves, chevron, spiral, solvable mazes and Truchet tiles). Panels can be rectangles, rounded rectangles, circles, hexagons or octagons. Cell size and wall width control how open a cut panel is; keep walls at least 1.5 times the material thickness so they don’t snap.
Output can be set to cut, score or fill-engrave, or Auto, which cuts hinges and cells and scores lines.
Where hinges get used
- Rounded boxes: the box generator has a rounded corner style built on the same hinge cuts.
- Notebook and journal covers that wrap round the spine.
- Lamp shades and lantern panels, combined with a decorative pattern.
- Curved signs, napkin rings and bracelet blanks.
Cutting tips
Hinges are many short cuts close together, so heat builds up. Use air assist, make sure every cut goes fully through (a cut that only scores won’t flex), and let the panel cool before bending. If you are unsure of your cut settings for a material, find them with a test card first. Send several panels to Import & Nest to fit them on one sheet.
Questions
What is a living hinge?
A pattern of short parallel cuts that lets a rigid sheet bend. The thin strips of material between the cuts twist slightly, and together they let the panel curve round a corner or roll into a cylinder.
Which material bends best?
Thin plywood (around 3 mm) and thin MDF. Grain direction matters in plywood: test a small sample in both directions before cutting a large panel. Acrylic is brittle and generally cracks in a hinge.
How do I make a hinge bend further?
Tighter line spacing and longer cuts bend further; wider bridges are stronger but stiffer. The diamond pattern bends in two directions.
Why did my hinge snap?
The bridges were too narrow for the material, the material was too dry or brittle, or it was bent too sharply. Widen the bridges, increase the spacing slightly or bend it more gently.
Can I limit the hinge to part of a panel?
Yes. Hinge zone width confines the cuts to a band, so the rest of the panel stays rigid. That is how rounded box corners are made.
