What it makes

The Workshop Templates studio makes ten jigs and templates for the workshop: router templates with bushing offset, French cleat brackets, drill and shelf-pin guides, bolt circles, chain sprockets, stacked pulleys, vent and speaker grilles, a laser focus ramp and paint stencils with bridges.

How it works

  1. Choose a template.
  2. Enter the sizes: the finished size, bit and bushing, or hole spacing.
  3. Check the preview.
  4. Export and cut.

Tips

  • Measure the bushing with calipers; the number on the box is not always exact.
  • Engrave the sizes on each jig so you know which one is which.
  • Need gears? The gear generator makes matching gear pairs.

Router safety: clamp the template and the work firmly, and feed against the bit’s rotation.

Export

Templates export as SVG, DXF or PDF at true size, with engraved labels on their own layer.

Questions

How does the bushing offset work?

A guide bushing is wider than the router bit, so the cut ends up inside the template edge. The studio grows the template opening by half the difference, (bushing minus bit) divided by two, so the finished hole is the size you asked for.

What is a French cleat?

Two strips cut at 45 degrees: one screwed to the wall, one to the shelf or tool holder. They hook together, and you can move things around the wall easily.

What is the focus ramp for?

It is a sloped test piece. Engrave a line along it and the thinnest part of the line shows where your laser is best focused.

Why do stencils need bridges?

Letters like O, A and B have middles that fall out. Bridges of 2 to 3 mm hold them in place.

Which material is best for templates?

6 mm MDF or birch plywood. It is stiff, flat and gives the bushing a smooth edge to follow.
