What the tumbler generator does

The Tumbler & Rotary studio lays out a design at the real size of the object it will go on and shows it on a 3D model of the cup, in its powder-coat colour, before you export. It covers more than 40 tumblers, mugs, glasses, bottles, pens and rolling pins. Pick the nearest one, then check the sizes with calipers, because brands differ by a few millimetres and that matters on a rotary.

Layouts

  • Front for a single name or logo.
  • Front and back, placed either side of a handle on mugs.
  • Repeated around for a set number of copies spaced evenly round the cup.
  • Full wrap repeating patterns such as mermaid scales, leopard print or mountains that line up at the seam.

On top of the layout you can add a name and a second line, a monogram (classic, split letter or circle), a design from the 4,500+ design library, or your own logo as SVG or PNG.

Straight cups and tapered cups

A straight-sided cup is easy: the design is a rectangle as wide as the circumference. Tapered cups are different. Because the top is wider than the bottom, a flat rectangle wrapped round the cup ends up curved and tilted. Enter the top and bottom diameters (or circumferences) and the height of the tapered part, and the studio warps the artwork so it sits straight on the finished cup. It also makes a paper template you can wrap round the cup to check the size before you engrave.

Setting up the rotary

Most “my wrap is the wrong size” problems are rotary settings, not artwork. The Rotary setup tab tells you the diameter to type into LightBurn or xTool Creative Space and where the seam should sit. Run the rotary setup test once when you set up a new rotary or change between roller and chuck: it shows whether the rotary is turning the right amount.

Settings vary. Powder coat, bare steel, glass and ceramic all need different power and speed, and two tumblers with the same colour can have different coatings. Test on the bottom of the cup or a spare, and use a test card on a flat sample of the coating if you have one.

Orders with many names

For a wedding party or team order, Batch makes one file per name from a list you paste in, or from an Etsy orders CSV. Each file is named after the person, so you can work down the list without editing artwork between cups. Before quoting a bulk order, put the laser time and finishing time into the price calculator to see the price per cup at 1, 5, 10 and 25 pieces.

Printed wraps, pens, rings and pipes

If you decorate with sublimation, vinyl or a UV printer, choose Printed wrap to get the curved flat shape of a tapered cup instead of a laser file. The same studio also makes engraving bands for pen barrels, ring bands from a ring size (US or EU) and a pipe saddle template for marking tube joints. For photos on a cup, prepare the image in Photo Engrave first and bring the PNG in as your design.

Questions

Why does my design look stretched or squashed on the cup?

The rotary settings don't match the object. The diameter (or circumference) you enter in the laser software has to match the part of the cup the roller or chuck touches. The Rotary setup tab gives you the exact number and where the seam goes.

What is a pre-warped design?

On a tapered cup the top is wider than the bottom, so a straight design wrapped round it fans out and tilts. The studio bends the artwork into the curved shape that ends up straight and level once it is on the cup.

Can I make one file per name for an order?

Yes. Batch makes a separate file for every name in a list, and it can read the names from an Etsy orders CSV.

Can I use it for sublimation or a UV printer?

Choose Printed wrap to get the curved flat shape of a tapered cup, which is what you need for sublimation paper, vinyl or a UV print.

What else does the studio make?

Pen barrel bands, ring bands sized by ring size, and a pipe saddle (fishmouth) template for welders and makers joining tubes.
