What it makes

The Houses & Buildings studio makes finger-jointed buildings you cut and glue: Christmas village houses with lit windows, birdhouses with the right entrance hole for the bird, book nooks that slide between the books on a shelf, dollhouses, geodesic domes, architectural models, stairs and miniature furniture. The village houses come in eight different styles, so a whole village never looks the same twice.

How it works

  1. Pick a building and a style.
  2. Size it: width, depth and height. Birdhouses choose the entrance hole from the bird.
  3. Enter your material thickness so the finger joints are a tight fit.
  4. Add windows, doors and roof details. Wall textures are engraved before the parts are cut.
  5. Export, cut and glue the walls first, then the roof.

Tips

  • Check the joint fit first. A quick test with the kerf calculator tells you how tight finger joints will be on your laser.
  • Make a village, not a house. Mix the styles and sizes; they look best in groups of three to five on a shelf or mantel.
  • Glow without heat. Use LED tea lights only, never real candles, inside wooden buildings.
  • Curved roofs and domes: a living hinge lets flat plywood bend round a curve.

Birdhouses outdoors: use thicker, untreated wood, add drainage holes and leave the inside unfinished. Paints and stains can harm birds.

Export

Every wall, roof and floor is laid out on sheets for your bed, with engraving and cutting on separate layers. Simple boxes for storage or gifts are quicker in the box generator.

Questions

Which house styles are there?

Eight village styles: a Tudor cottage, a chapel with a steeple, a bakery with an awning, a log cabin with a porch, a barn, a Victorian house, a brick townhouse and a schoolhouse with a bell tower. Each has its own engraved wall texture.

How do I light the windows?

Cut-out windows let an LED tea light shine through. Glue a piece of tracing paper behind the windows to spread the light into a warm glow.

Why does the birdhouse ask which bird?

Each species needs its own entrance hole size. The studio picks the right one for the bird you choose so the box suits the birds you want and keeps out bigger ones.

What thickness should I use?

3 mm plywood for village houses and miniatures, 6 mm for birdhouses that live outdoors. Enter the exact thickness so the finger joints fit.

Can I use painted wood for a birdhouse?

No. Use untreated, unpainted wood inside a birdhouse. Paint or stain only the outside, if at all.
