What it makes
The QR Codes & Tags studio makes QR codes as clean vectors, so the laser engraves sharp, square modules rather than a blurry bitmap. Put them on a tag with a caption and a hanging hole, on a coaster or on a sign. They are popular for guest Wi-Fi signs, business cards and table tents, pet tags, product labels and equipment tags that link to a manual.
What a QR code can hold
- Website: a shop, menu, review page or portfolio
- Wi-Fi login: guests scan to join without typing the password
- Contact card: name, phone and email straight into the phone’s contacts
- Email, phone or plain text
Making it scannable
An engraved QR code has to survive the laser and a phone camera. The studio shows the module size at the top as you change the code size.
| Rule | Why |
|---|---|
| Modules 0.5 mm or larger | Smaller modules blur together when engraved |
| Quiet zone of 2+ modules | Phones need blank space around the code to find it |
| Strong contrast | Light wood, slate (inverted) and anodized aluminum (inverted) scan best |
| Higher error correction on textured materials | Survives scratches and wood grain |
| Shorter content | Fewer characters means bigger modules at the same size |
Always test-scan first. Scan the preview on screen with your phone before engraving, and scan a test piece before a batch. If a link is long, a shorter URL makes a much more scannable code.
Style and materials
Choose square, rounded or dot modules. Square modules scan most reliably; rounded and dot styles look softer but need a little more size. Engrave on light wood for a dark-on-light code. On dark materials, Invert engraves the background instead; that suits slate and anodized aluminum, where the laser makes the surface lighter.
Tags and captions
Pick a tag shape, add a short caption (“SCAN FOR WI-FI”, “SCAN TO REVIEW US”) and a hanging hole. For a code inside a larger design, export just the code and place it in your layout, or combine it with a name sign.
Batches
Asset tags, event badges and product labels often need a different link on every piece. Paste the list of links under Batch production and the studio makes one tag per link on shared sheets (Pro plan). For numbered runs without codes (valve, cable and rack labels), the Tags & Marking studio in the app is built for that.
Settings
Fine, crisp modules need well-tuned engraving. Run a quick test card to find the cleanest fill on your material, then engrave the code.
Questions
Why won't my engraved QR code scan?
The modules (the small squares) are too small, the quiet zone around the code is too narrow, or the contrast is weak. Keep modules at 0.5 mm or larger, leave at least 2 modules of blank space around the code, and engrave on a material with strong contrast.
What does error correction do?
Higher error correction adds redundancy, so the code still scans when part of it is scratched, worn or broken up by wood grain. It makes the code denser, so the modules get smaller at the same size.
How do I engrave a QR code on dark material?
Turn on Invert, which engraves the background instead of the modules. On slate and anodized aluminum the laser makes the surface lighter, so inverting keeps the code dark-on-light as phones expect.
Can I make a Wi-Fi sign for guests?
Yes. Choose Wi-Fi login, enter the network name and password, and add a caption like "SCAN FOR WI-FI". Phones that scan it join the network without typing.
Can I make a different code for every tag?
Paste a list of links under Batch production and the studio makes one tag per link on shared sheets (Pro plan).
